PART 3 - REDEMPTION

9

Bethany stood uncertainly as the pastor closed the door. She had finally persuaded her mother to allow her to wear something other than the stupid tartan skirt and he hadn’t even looked at her. She could feel her happy mood begin to dissipate, he was acting really strangely. Almost like he was nervous. But why?

“Please sit,” he said distractedly, as he circled her to take his seat behind the desk.

Now he did look at her and his eyes widened slightly in apparent approval as she sat down in as ladylike a manner as she could. Her pretty floral smock dress rode up a little, showing slightly more of her tanned thighs than she had anticipated. He glanced down at them briefly, his handsome face never losing its distracted look, before raising his eyes to meet hers.

“Are you okay?” she asked him before he had a chance to speak.

“Um...yes...well no. Thank you for asking Bethany, I’m not feeling well. Actually, I don’t know how much help I’ll be to you today.” She could almost have sworn he was blushing. “You look...nice today. Very...” his voice trailed off.

“Thanks,” she said, filling the void left by his unspoken words.

An uncomfortable silence ensued and he shuffled some papers on his desk before blurting, “Look Bethany, would you mind if we postponed today’s appointment? I really need to...rest or something.”

Bethany’s heart ached to see him like this, was it her? Was he trying to distance himself again?

“Really, it’s not you,” he said, as though reading her thoughts, “I really am feeling ill and I don’t think it would be right to continue.”

“Okay...I guess.” She shrugged.

The pastor smiled, his complexion really was a little grey. He stood up and came around his desk. “Thank you Bethany.” They both stood.

This time it was she who surprised him by impulsively grabbing his arm and pulling him to a stop. Without allowing herself to reconsider, she stood on tiptoes and kissed him quickly on the cheek. .

“I hope you get better, maybe we could meet tomorrow if you’re feeling better?” she asked, looking at him hopefully. His eyes had widened again, this time in surprise. He seemed about to say something and she was certain from the look on his face that he was going to say no. Perhaps thinking better of it, he closed his mouth and instead took her arm gently and began walking her to the door.

“I would like that,” he said quietly, “I will text you if I am feeling up to it.”

“You have my number?”

“Yes, it’s on the form you and your mother filled in before we began our counseling. Bethany felt a rush of joy and almost skipped the rest of the way to the door. She placed her hand on the door handle and turned back to him.

“Send me a message either way okay?” she whispered, and turned the handle.

She jumped in shock when the door opened to reveal the tall figure of her mother just a foot beyond
